Good garage lighting makes working safer and more comfortable, whether you are swapping tyres, doing small repairs or detailing your car. Hexagon LED lighting has become a popular choice for garages because the honeycomb pattern spreads light evenly across the whole space. So how many hexagon garage lights do you actually need? The short answer: with a ceiling height of around 3 m, a single garage (15–20 m²) needs 3–4 cells and a double garage (30–40 m²) needs 5–7 cells. How many cells do you need?
One Hexagon cell produces approximately 2760 lumens and uses 24 W. For general garage lighting, around 300 lux is recommended. If you do detailed work in the garage, such as repairs or detailing, aim for 500–750 lux. The rule of thumb below is based on a ceiling height of about 3 m:

If you do a lot of precision work in the garage, go for the upper end of the range. If the garage is mainly used for parking and storage, the lower end is plenty.
How to use the table
Start by measuring the floor area: length times width. A garage of 6 x 6.5 m, for example, is 39 m², which puts it on the 40 m² row with 6–7 cells. Then think about how you use the space. Around 300 lux of general light is enough for parking and fetching things from the shelves, but if you change brake pads, sand paintwork or give your car a thorough clean, 500–750 lux makes the job much easier. In that case, choose the higher cell count from the table.
If your garage is split into zones, for example a parking bay and a separate work area, you can also build two separate patterns: general light above the car and a denser pattern above the workbench.
Why a hexagon? The hexagonal shape spreads light from six sides, so shadows stay soft. In practice, this means you can see under the bonnet and along the sides of the car without a head torch, and no harsh shadow from a single bright point gets in the way of your work.
6500 K or 4000 K?
Colour temperature affects how the space feels and how well you can see the details.
- 6500 K is cool daylight. It is the best choice for garage work, workshops and detailing, because surfaces, scratches and dirt stand out clearly. Browse our 6500 K Hexagon lights.
- 4000 K is neutral light. It suits garages that double as a hobby room or living space, where you want a slightly softer atmosphere.
- RGB is designed as accent lighting. It adds visual impact, but it does not replace general lighting.
If you also want your garage to look atmospheric, size the general lighting first using the table with 6500 K or 4000 K cells, and only then add RGB as decoration. That way your work light is always sufficient and the accent light is purely a bonus.
Dimmable or not?
Hexagon lights come with three different control options. The right one depends on how you use the space.
- Non-dimmable: the simplest and most affordable option. The light switches on at full brightness from your ordinary wall switch. This is enough for most garages. See our non-dimmable Hexagon lights.
- Step-dimmable: brightness changes between 100%, 60% and 30% using your ordinary switch. A good choice if the garage is sometimes a workshop and sometimes a more relaxed hobby space.
- Stepless 0–100%: brightness is adjusted with a remote control, and this option always needs a driver (power supply). Ideal if you want to fine-tune the light for each situation. You will find the options in our dimmable Hexagon lights collection.
If your garage is purely a workspace, a non-dimmable model is often the most sensible choice: the light is always at full brightness and no extra controls are needed. If you also spend relaxed evenings in the garage, dimming gives you flexibility without giving up bright work light.
What else do you need for installation?
Besides the cells, you will need a few parts for installation. Planning ahead saves time on installation day. First decide which pattern you want: a classic honeycomb, a square pattern or a diamond pattern. The pattern determines which connectors you need and how many suspension points go into the ceiling.
- Corner connectors to match the pattern: 120° for honeycomb, 90° for square and 60° for diamond patterns. Where three tubes meet, you need T or Y branch connectors. See our corner connectors.
- Suspension wires: available in 1, 2 or 3 m lengths, so you can adjust the height of the light to suit your ceiling.
- Ceiling plugs: fixings for concrete or plasterboard ceilings. You will find them among our mounting accessories.
- Enough suspension points: every separate pattern needs at least three suspension points. In larger layouts, plan roughly one per outer corner; a 6-cell honeycomb, for example, needs about 8 points.
- Assemble on the floor: put the pattern together on the floor first and test that every cell lights up before lifting it to the ceiling.
- Electrical connection: hardwiring must follow local electrical regulations. We recommend using an electrician.
How much electricity does the lighting use?
Thanks to LED technology, Hexagon lighting is energy-efficient even though it delivers a lot of light. Example: a 30 m² garage fitted with 5 cells has a total power of 120 W. If the lights are on for an average of 2 hours a day, that comes to approximately €13 of electricity per year. Total power is easy to estimate yourself: multiply the number of cells by 24 W. According to the table, even an 80 m² space with 15 cells uses just 360 W.
The lifespan is long, too: the cells are rated for 50,000 hours. At 2 hours a day, that means decades without replacing a single lamp.
Frequently asked questions
How many cells do I need for a single garage?
A single garage is typically 15–20 m². With a ceiling height of about 3 m, 3–4 cells are enough for general lighting. If you do a lot of repair work in the garage, choose 4 cells.
And for a double garage?
A double garage is usually 30–40 m². We recommend 5–7 cells: 5–6 cells for 30 m² and 6–7 cells for 40 m².
Can I extend the lighting later?
Yes. The Hexagon system is made up of cells and connectors, so you can plan your pattern so that more cells can be added later. Just remember to add the extra connectors and suspension points as well.
Does it work in a cold garage?
